Lord Hartington disclaimed any intention to oppose the supplies. The Secretary of State for the Indian Department denied that a quarrel had been picked with the Ameer, with only the object of securing frontier. Calcutta, Nov. 28. It is stated on good authority that the reply of the Ameer is both defiant and inao-
lent. It is improbable that the Ameer Trill defend Candahar. It is believed he possesses seventy-two battalions of infantry, and twenty-five regiments of cavalry, with arms of modern pattern, and twenty-five guns. (SPECIAL to the press agency.) London, December 6. Lord Halifax in the Lords, and Mr. Wbitebread m the Commons, gave notice of a motion condemning the policy of the Government in Afghanistan. A full discussion is expected. The Garonne has arrived. December 7. Money is in less demand, and the prices are firm. Bank rate, five. The bank reserve has been weakened by the gold withdrawals of private deposits. The stock market is depressed. There are rumors of impending banking trouble. Consols, 94J, ex divi The Canadian 4 per cent, loan of three millions has been half subscribed at 96J. The attendance is well maintained at the wool sales, but a lower range of prices has been established. Biddings are made with less hesitation. The withdrawals tip to date amount to 15,000 bales. Ministers have resigned through the Governor not accepting their advice, which, it is stated, favored dissolution. The men employed by the A. S. N. Company have petitioned Government for protection against the assaults of the strikers. December 8. Mr. Robertson has accepted the task of forming a new Ministry. Brisbane, Dec. 7. The Queensland Ministry has been reconstructed. Mr. Griffiths takes the Public Works and Public Instruction portfolios, and Mr. Garrick that of Attorney-General.
