The Hon. J. T. Fisher having sufficiently recovered from his illness to warrant his continuing his journey northwards, proceeded to C'hristchurch to-day by the express train. The lion, gentleman will remain in Christchurch for a short time, and anticipates being able to proceed to Wellington on Wednesday. The Hon. Mr. Fisher, Commissioner of Telegraphs, has expressed to us his willingness to comply with the request of the North Otago Turf Club to have the course connected by wire with the telegraph line, provided that the Club would accept the same terms as those agreed to by the WeUinsrtim and Christchurch Clubs. In each of those places, we are informed, the Clubs paid the cost of erecting the wire, and the Commissioner of Telegraphs wil agree to have a wire stretched to the Oamaru course on the same conditions, r the Club is desirous of having the work done, and is willing to bear the cost, which, we are assured, would only amount to about Lls.

One of our country readers has requested us to make the following particulars public : —The Teaneraki railway station ai:-l township have been very recently reehristened, the more euphonious title of Enfield being bestowed upon the town and station. In consequence of this our correspondent in ordering goods from merchants in Dunedin, desired them to be forwarded to Enfield, Teaneraki ; but to his annoyance and inconvenience the reply he received was that they did . not know where Enfield was. In order to obviate a recurrence of similar mishaps we may inform the commercial community of Dunedin and the Colony generally that Enfield is the chief town of the Teaneraki district and railway s ation at that place. We would direct particular attention to an announcement which appears elsewhere, giving the train arragements in connection with the North Otago Turf Club's races. The usual monthly meeting of the Waitaki Road Board will be held in the office, Tynestreet, to-morrow, at 11 a.m. At the Resident Magistrate's Court, this morning, before T. W. Parker, Esq., R.M., on the information of the Inspector of Nuisances (Mr. Toms), W. H. Ronayne was fined for a stray cow, with tether rope attached, 10s., and W. M'Jennet stray horse, 2s. 6d. William Walsh was brought up on remand, charged with obtaining money on false pretences. Mr. O'Meagher called four witnesses, who proved pretty conclusively that it was next to impossible that the accused could have been in their company and at Maitland's Hotel at one and the same time. The evidence of some of the witnesses, was, however, rather conflicting, but his Worship decided to give the accused the benefit of the doubt, and he was accordingly discharged.

Some of the stati n holders are-—we are informed —experiencing great difficulty in obtaining wo d washers. In one instance a station holder offered 35s a week and found for lh hours a day, with Is an hour for extra time,"the additional inducement being offered that they should receive their full wages in the event of the weather being wet and the men unable to work ; but even these liberal terms failed to obtain the necessary hands. From this it would seem that labor is still greatly required in the district, and another argument in favor of Oamaru receiving a full share of the immigrants arriving in the Colony is thus forthcoming. There was a capital attendance at the farewell performance of Burton's Australian Circus on Saturday evening, and the audience appeared to be highly pleased with the entertainment provided. This evening the Circus will perform at Hampden, and tomorrow evening it will appear at Palmerston. ■We can promise our Southern friends a genuine treat. We have been informed of a somewhat strange incident in connection with the Waimate fire. In one of the houses destroyed, that belonging to Messrs. Robrrrson Brothers, was a tin of kerosene, which, though exposed to great heat, was not consumed, although everything else around it was destroyed, including some tubs containing water. The top of the tin was unsoldered by the heat of the fire, and the kerosene must actually have boiled, but not a drop of it was burned. It Mas afterwards tried and found to be still good, though it had been robbed of some of its gaseous jjroperties. A meeting of the Waitaki Branch of the Educational Institute of Otago was held on Saturday afternoon, the President (Mr, Piric) presiding. Mr. Fiddler was appointed to read a paper at the coming Easter Conference of the Institute in Duuedin. The Branch having discussed the regulations issued by the Education Department for the examination, classification, and certification of teachers, the following resolutions were passed :—"That vocal music should not be compulsory in obtaining a certificate. That, as regards elementary science, it be pointed out that there appears to b« a discrepancy between the provisions of regulation 7, and those of regulation 10, optional subjects under Class D. That this Branch is of opinion that the conditions for obtaining certificates in Classes A, B, and C, regulation 10, are too exclusive with respect to the University from which the candidate may hold certificates."

We need scarcely remind our readers that Messrs. Baker and Fan-on will, with a strong company, open the Volunteer Hall this evening for a. short season. The piece to be presented is "Conrad and Lizette," in which Baker and Farron have delighted audiences in every part ,qj the colonies. We need say nothing to recommend the performance to our readers, for Baker and Farron are already well-known in Oamaru.

The Evangelistic service last evening was very numerously attended., notwithstanding the damp -weather, and appeared to be appreciated by the audience. It was notified that the Rev. H. Dewsbury and the Rev. J. Mjrams would deliver addresses next Sunday evening. A meeting of the Committee of the North Otago Turf Club will be held at eight o'clock to-morrow evening, for the transaction of general business. The members of the Philharmonic Society will meet for practice to-moj>rovy eyening, at 8 o'clock, in Waitaki Hall,

On Saturday afternoon the members of the Excelsior Cricket Club indulged in a scratch match, sides being chosen by Cooke and Marshall. Some very good play was shown during the game, which was won by Marshall's sjde by 10 runs, the scores having been—Marshall's side, 67 ; Cooke's side, 57. For the former Marshall contributed 13, Finch 14, and T, Hesvatt 10; while Cooke assisted his side with 13, the byes numbering the disgraceful total of 16.
