(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.) London, December 2. A severe engagement has taken place in Periwar. The British troops were forced to retreat somewhat, but were eventually victorious. The Internationalists are active. An attempt was made to assassinate Tisza, the Hungarian Treasurer, at a convocation of delegates at Pesth. Sydney, December 2. The cricket match between the Australian Eleven and Fifteen of Sydney has ended. In the second innings of the Eleven Baimerman made 24; Blackham,' 24; Horan, 56 ; Gregory, 12; Boyle, 3§ ; S|>offorth, ill ; Bailey, unsubstituted. The Fifteen won in one innings by 15 runs. December 3. The You Yangs has arrived. Her detention was owing to a storm. The Government are asking Parliament for L 50,000 for the Exhibition. The skin glove encounter between Foley and Newton lasted seventy minutes, and was very severe, but was undecided, as the police interfered. §£The seamen are quite willling to effect a compromise. At a meeting this afternoon the seamen appointed arbitrators. No Chinamen are to be discharged, and others are permitted to enter the Noumea, Fiji, and China trade. Meanwhile the Company are engaging numerous seamen and firemen.
