LATEST HOME AND FOREIGN NEWS. (special to press agency.) Constantinople, Dec. 1.
It is reported that negotiations are proceeding between the Porte and Great Britain for a new convention, with the object of ensuring greater influence and the right ot intervention in Turkish affairs. Bombay, Dec. 2.
General Roberts' force advanced, and found the enemy in the Piewar Pass. He made a reconnaissance, whicn disclosed the enemy's position. An engagement ensued, resulting it the defeat of the Afghans. The British loss is slight. London, Nov. 30 (Evening).
The diplomatic correspondence which recently passed between the British and Russian Governments in reference to the Russian proceedings in Central Asia were issued from the Foreign Office to-day. It further shows that in the reply to the first despatch of Earl Salisbury, asking for explanations, the Russian Chancellor even denied that any formally accredited mission had been sent to Cabul. This was subsequently explained in the. manner previously telegraphed, namely, as an act of courtesy on the part of Kauffman, the GovernorGeneral of Turkistan. December 1. Mr. Gladstone on Saturday, at a banquet at Greenwich, urged the Liberals to united action against the Tories, and afterwards addressed a monster gathering at Woolwich. He reviewed the policy of the present Government, condemning the secret treaties and the growing expenditure on the Afghan war without consulting Parliament and the general abridgement of the liberties of the people. December 2. Mr. Gladstone in addressing his constituents at Greenwich, refuted the accusation of the Secretary of State for India that the late Cabinet was responsible for the Afghan difficulties, or that any action of the Liberals caused estrangements between the Ameer and the Government. He also added that the war was unjust. DIRECT AUSTRALIAN NEWS. (REUTER'S TELEGRAMS, PER PRESS AGENCY.) Sydney, Dec. 2. The Government have decided to take the exhibition into their own hands. The aspect of the seamen's strike is unchanged. The Australians in their second innings made 51. New South Wales Fifteen won in one innings, with 16 runs. Bailey and Spofforth did not play. The latter is ill, but the former is progressing favorably. At a public banquet to the cricketers to-night the Governor was present.
