The barque Aikshaw is now in the harbor, haying arrived this morning. We have not heard whether or not it is the intention of the Government to see that no delay occurs in unloading her and the numerous other vessels that are in the harbor. However, we would suggest that, in order to make sure that a state of affairs damaging to this port should not continue, the merchants should communicate with the Commissioner of Railways. There surely cannot be a scarcity of trucks now. There is no particular pressure of business at this season of the year to bring about such a result. The grain season is over, and one would think that there would be so many trucks lying idle that the department would scarcely knowwhere to put them. This is what should be the ease if the number was nearly sufficient to meet demands during the grain season. If the number is so lamentably short that a
few cannot be spared from the numerous sources to keep pace with the trade at the Port of Oamaru, what bad management there has been on the part oi somebody, it remains for the Commissioner of Railways to so apportion the trucks as to get over the ! difficulty. Strong representations should be immediately made to him, with a view to the accomplishment of that end. Communication was restored with Port Darwin last night.
The person " Opposite the Royal has the satisfaction of appearing in print this evening We have not space to do moce than caution our readers against one of the sentences in his letter, which must not | be read aloud by those who have not undergone a course of training to ensure their reaching the end o£ it m safety. The writer should have supplied a postscript, containing directions where the reader was to take breath. What alongwinded person he must be. The members of the Philharmonic Society met for rehearal last night at the Waitaki H-ill For a first practice the attendance was good and the result satisfactory. The "Messiah" is the subject chosen for the next concert, which will be given at Chnst- ; maa time.
The Rev. C. S. Byng, whose ability to please his audiences; has become proverDia., will lecture to-night on '■', Judas on his trjal," in the Volunteer Hall. We hope that the lecturer will receive every encouragement to favor us again at some future time, and that he will meet with the most hospitable of all receptions —a full house.
The sale of the Whitstone Estate was not completed when we went to press, andit was impossible to ascertain the results so tar as'the sale had gone in time for this issue. We can, however, state that the prices realised were considered by good judges to be very handsome. "The Great International Circas" will appear to-night in the space opposite the Northern Hotel. The entertainment includes novel and wonderful items by those that are reputed to be clever in their particular lines, and, judging from the criticisms of the press, is well worthy of patroaa'£ by all lovers of such amusements. A little delicate attention to that section of our society the larrikins on the the gentlemen in ultramarine would hardly be deemed intrusive by the former, and would, we think, be appreciated by the General public, especially at night when the festive natures of the dear boys seem to undergo such extraordinary development ; that they would be plmost enough to make . ' a wicked person swear.
