COUNTY COUNCIL CONFERENCE.

Wellington, August, 7. The County Council Conference met today, Mr. Bastings was in the chair. The Chairman said lie had waited on the Colonial Treasurer with regard to charitable aid and hospital management. Mr. Ballance had informed him that the Government would give pound for pound on the money raised, without deducting such contributions from subsidies to counties and municipalities, and would introduce a Hill enabling County and Municipal Councils to undertake the management of subsidised charitable institutions. Mr. Saunders moved, " That in the opinion of this Conference it is not desirable that the County Councils of New Zealand should undertake either to provide or to distribute the funds of charitable aid and hospitals." Mr. M'Whirtier seconded. The Hon. R. Campbell moved that the oil'er of the Government be accepted.
