ff'ROir OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] * DUNEDIN. August 5. The Standing Committee of the Diocese reports that the response to the appeal for money for general diocesan purposes has been most discouraging. Scarcely any of the country parishes can pay their debts, and even one or two of the metropolitan parishes seem inclined in the direction of repudiation. The Committee, on the receipt of these replies, passed a resolution to forward the various parishes' letters to the bishop and to request his lordship not to send out an}' more clergymen as the diocese cannot support them. The Times says that this is a step that every member of the Church ought to view with shame and rettret. The heaviest fall of snow that has occurred for years took place this morning. Siiow is still failing at in- j tojLvak.
