WELLINGTON. July 30. The Conference of Municipal delegates met this afternoon. On the motion of Mr. Standish, it was carried, "That in the opinion of this Conference, the Government is not warranted in making any deductions, since Ist January last, for maintenance of either hospital or charitable institutions from subsidies granted by Parliament by way of endowment to municipalities, and that Messrs. Moorhouse, Sutton, and Brett interview the Government on the subject, in the view of ascertaining whether they are prepared to pay over such subsidies in full." Mr. Ch.irrers moved, and it was oarried, " That the expanse of the Conference be borne by all these which aro represented thereat.- in proportion to population." The Conference then commenced to go through the '•'Municipal Corporations Act, 1876," clause by clause, and'adjourned at 4.30. It is probable that the Hon. J. N. Wilson will be appointed a member of Executive in Legislative - Council to assist the Hon. Colonel Whitmore.
CHRISTCHURCH. July 30. At the Supreme Court to-day, Mr. Joynt applied for a rule nisi calling on tiie Colonial Treasurer to show cause why a mandamus should not issue to compel him to pay over to the Road Boards certain money accruing from the Laud Fund, alleged to be due on December 31st last. After a long argument, his Honor Judge Johnston granted the application, the rule to be returnable in a fortnight. Steps have been taken here for the publication of a Coursing Calendar for New Zealand ♦ AUCKLAND. July 30. Attention is drawn to the high rate of freights and the scarcity of shipping for timber. A portion of the boat has been found in which Mr. Marshall, J.P., left the North Shore for Whangapoua. Thif leaves no doubt now that he was drowned. The North Shore Ferry Company sold their steamers Tongariro and Durham for L 6750, to the Kaipara Steam Company, to be used in opposition to Casey's steamer. The new company have obtained a subsidy by tender, and commence running their boats on the Ist August.
