HARBOUR BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Board wys held at the Harbour Chambers to-day. There were present—Messrs. Sumpter (chairman), Steward, Shrimski, Gilchrist, Headland, and Meek. MINUTES, ETC. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence read and approved. GUNPOWt) I.E. A letter was read from Captain Sewell, Harbour Master, drawing the attention of the Board to the fact of vessels with gunpowd-r on board arriving alongside the Breakwater, and that in one instanc the powder had been kept on board smiiitiine. It had t ten bee l taken to th. magazine by the crew of the vessel and left outsifle for some time. Neither himself nor the keeper ot the magazine had received any information as to the poud' r being on board or of ir, having been b-nded. The writer also called attention to the fact f hat the vessel in questioi (the Waitaki) on arrival not liaviny hoisted the regulation flag, the New Zealand Harbour Regulations had been infringed. It was recommended by the Secretary to the Board and the Harbour Alastei that, a gunpowder anchorage and landing place should be defined, and that theii position and that of the magazine be re ferred to the Hon. the Commissioner o Customs, with a view to being gazetted. —The recommendation was adopted, mi. ha<kutt's claim. A letter from Mr. B. C. Haggitt wit reference to his long-standing claim for eommis.sion on the loan was read, re questing the Board to reconsider )(.■- decision not to entertain his claim.—Con sideration of the matter was postponed until the next meeting.

OTHER CORRESPONDENCE. A large number of other letters dealing with matters of detail were read. ACCOUNTS. Aooounts to the amount of L 3824 4s. Lid. were passed for payment. LATE PUBLIC MEETING. Mr. Steward, as Chairman of the late public meeting with reference to the lack of sufficient facilities for shipping, the lack .of railway trucks, &c., brought under the notice of the Board the action taken at that meeting, with a view to obtaining the co-operaiion of the Board. He called particular attention to the resolution passed at the meeting requesting the Board to form a road to tin Breakwater. He concluded by moving the following resolution : —"That an estimate be prepared forth with (if tile cos' of opening up a road to the Breakwater, the spoil t«> be utilised as far as possible in reclaiming ground at the back of Is <. 3 Wharf; such estimate, with plan, to be' submitted at a meeting of tli't Board to be held this day fortnight." Mr. Headland seconded the notion. Some discussion took place upon the matter, during which many difficulties in the way of carrying out the proposal were urged. It was pointed oui that in addition to the cost of forming the road, considerable additional experie would have to be incurred in other ways, while there would be an end to reapoisibility as to the delivery of goods. Eveitually the carried. NOTICES OP MOTION. Mr. Shrimeki gave notice thit he would move the following motions it the next meeting of the Board :

"That Mr. M'Gregor be requested to kindly furnish to the Board by the next meeting his claim against the Hoard, including the present contract." The Board then rose.
