The Governor and suite were on the ground early, but there were very few on the grand stand, the lawn or the saddling paddock. Bookmakers were numerous, but the general public were not much inclined to that description of investment The only accident was that-in which a rider was thrown, ;in the Hack Hurdle EaGe, He seemed considerably injured, getting on his feet twice, and immediately fa 1 ling again. To-morrow bids fair to be a beautiful day. FLYING STAKES HANDICAP. Titania ... ... ... 1 Stirabout ... ... ... 2 There were eleven entries. After all other starters were put up, Kakapo's number went up, and he saddled at the starting plaoe, Those scratched were Danebury, Tawera, Legacy, and Sailor. The starters were Kakapo, Izaak Walton, Titanin, Standard Bearer;. Glengarry, Lady of the Lake, and Stirabout. There was a bungle at the start; but the second attempt was successful, all getting away pretty well together, except Standard! Bearer,' who fell sadly in the rear. MAIDEN PLATE. Mufti ... 1 y- Pinfire... ... ..; ... 2 There were only three and starters, Talleyrand, Mufti, and Pinfire.' Mufti went off with the lead, all three passing the stand in a cluster, Mnfti being hard held in passing the grand stand, Pi'niire, who had made the pace, leadings and Talleyrand last. A good race took place between Mufti and Pinfire, especially in the straight run coining home, but Mufti, seeming to have most wind and bottom, responded to the call, and forged ahead in the exciting struggle which took place in the 75 yards before reaching the grand stand, and won gallantly by about a neck. JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP. Titania ... ... ... 1 Songster ... ... ... 2 Out of thirteen entries, the following horses ciinie to the scratch: —Danebury, Otupai, Titania. Songster, Ouida, Pinfire, L'-g:icy, and Stanley. There was some difficulty in starting, the horses being sent back twice. Eventually they all got well off together,-Stanley leading, Ouida and Otupai second and third. After an exciting race Titania came in first, Songster second. The following weights were declared for the Hurdle Race :
TO-DAY'S RACING. February 8. The following are the results of to-day's racing so far ; HURDLE HANDICAP. Te Whetumanamara... ... I Slavic ... ... ... ... 2 Victor... ... ... ... •! This was a capital race between Te. Whetu and Shark. All the horses jumped splendidly, but Te Whetu had the best pace. At the second hurdle Grey Momns fell, throwing iiis ridel" (M'lvor), who seems badly hurt ; he got up and mounted immediately, but no sooner had he done this than iie fell oft' quite helpless. At the finish Shark (whipping hard) ran Te Whetu very close, but the latter won by two lengths. Shark second, and Victor third. "WELLINGTON Cin>. Lara ... ... ... ... 1 Trump Card ... ... ... 2 Otupai... ... ... ... 13 This was a wonderfully good race, allot pace being kept, np from the start to the finish. Lara jumped away with the lead, after several false starts, and kept it throughout, though very hard pressed by Trump Card and Otupai. There was tremendous excitement, and when the horses entered the straight deafening cries of " Lara" were raised. Eight started. Lara won by about a length ; Trump Card 2nd, and Otupai 3rd ; but there was so little difference between the two latter that there was much uncertainty as to place.
