THE TIMARU HARBOUR WORKS.
♦ (per pkkss agency.) Timaku, January 15. The newly elected Harbour Board met to-day, when Mr. Fulbert Archer was elected chairman. The report of the Timaru Harbour Commission was read, and the thanks of the Board were passed to the Commission for the same. The Engineer was instructed forthwith to make a survey and take soundings and borings in the harbour on the late Mr. Balfour's chosen site for the breakwater ; and it was resolved that an urgent request be forwarded to Government by the Chairman to give their sanction to the harbour works being commenced at once, and allow tlie Board to call for tenders for a solid mole 300 ft., to commence from the shore at the spot selected by the late Mr. Balfour, this being tlie site fixed by the Harbour Commission as most suitable to commence operations. It was further resolved that the Engineer be instructed to prepare specifications and call for tenders for alternate forms for solid concrete blocks and of plcrre jwd'i faced with concrete, and provide in the specifications for accommodating vessels at as early a date as possible. Resolved also, that the Chairman intimate to the Government that the Board considers a mole of 300 ft. of great service to the Port of Timaru, as it will be remunerative as the work progresses. The Engineer is to be telegraphed for to Auckland that his immediate services are required in Timaru. It was resolved that tlie Engineer report to the Board as soon as possible on plant and other requirements necessary for the Board to provide, and that Guthrie and Larnach's tender for 10QQ tons Portland cement, at L 4 1 (is,. ud. per ton, be accepted,
