SINKING OF THE ELI WHITNEY.

[FROM OUR OWN correspondent.] Wellington, February 24.

The hulk Eli Whitney, with 800 tons of coal on boar;!, sank in tiie harbour, in deep water, about one o'clock this morning. A man in charge was aroused by his wife, wiio is only sixteen years old ; avid hearing a rush of water in the hold, he got his wife and child hurriedly on deck, just in time to place them and himself on a large plank. They drifted to the baths, aid the man, quite eKhaust£ e ,., dragged himself to the neighbourr-V house for assistance. His wife was found, dead and the baby missing. A northerly gale was blowing at the time, and it was intensely dark. The hulk carried no lights. It is reported that the Taup'o ran into her.
