BOOKS BACK?
Rumor About Bill Next Session IT IS NOT WANTED THERE is a rujnor going the rounds that during next session of Parliament there is every chance of the introduction 6t a Bill which will aim at the. relicensing of the bookmakers. Even m high racing circles there are those who will say that this measure is sure to come before the House. That New Zealand racing would be the better for the bookmaker back on the course all reasonable followers are ready to agree, and every time a returned contingent comes back from Sydney or Melbourne this is the first subject to be discussed. -"Truth". has no two opinions on the matter, but it is also our opinion that when it comes to the tiYne to relicense the books it will be "this year, next year, sometime, never." In recent times an effort has been made to get minor gaming legislation through the House, but without success. Then, though they deny it, it is a fact that the association controlling the Illegal betting does not at heart want to get back on the course. They find that the monej& comes m quite nicely under present conditions, and this when they, are protected by all manner of outlawish rules. ,lf they had to go back to the course they would have to be bookmakers m realTly, not m name. The majority of those who bet today, were they to be put on a course j to-morrow, would find that they could not take it when they felt like it and then put it back on the machine. They would have to x lay odds, -and that is as foreign to them as laying eggs.
