CHANGE A FAILURE
Distances Too Short In High Weights (From "N.Z. Truth's" Auckland Rep.) The suggestion that hurdle races should be mostly over longer than twelve-furlong trips was made with the hope that stayers would be encouraged. VET when some country clubs decided * to delete hurdie races and replace them with high weights, there was no move m the direction desired. Take the cases of Matamata and Rotorua. At Matamata the High Weight was run over 8% furlongs and at Rotorua the High Weights were of a mile only. These are not the only cases that could be quoted. "N.Z. Truth" takes it that one object of placing these high weights on racing programmes was to cater not only for hurdle horsemen, but for hurdle horses also. " . In this they have failed, for flat performers mostly take the money, and it certainly seems that hurdle performers only should be catered for when there is no jumping event on the programme. ' Such seems a very feasible and reasonable proposition, and if the suggestion is ever acted upon it. may also be wise, to consider making them; nothing less than ten furlongs.
