LIE got beaten m his race, but through no fault of his own, but when riders were changed he started to win. Came the time and he was sent across the water, but not a great deal of luck came his way. Placed performances yes, but wins, not too many. Thought to be purely a sprinter New Zealanders got a bit of a shock when one day at Flemington White Fang won a mile and a-quarter race and. broke "five." That performance was good enough to win for him any ten-furlong race m this country, but when he returned hack home he could not be got to winning form. Last, season only one success came his way— an open sprint at Gisborne. However, it is a long lane, and at | Christmas at Ellersiie he began to throw out signs of winning one. The second day at Trentham he was fourth m the mile and three and then on Saturday came his success. He took charge with three to go m the Consolation and held on long enough to beat Historic. Strangely enough the win gave Tom Metcalf his first success since he wassmashed up at Feilding last Novem-' ber. J
