Dinkum Duff
NO doubt can there be that the proof of the pudding is m its eating. Which vulgar adage was never better exemplified than m the athletic record of William Duff, one of the sporting lights of Dunedin. As a middle-mark man m handicap events, "Bill" Duff, m his prime, could stand up to — or rather keep pace with — the best sprinters of that era. For Instance, the 220 yds. m twentythree and three-fifths seconds on a dead track and pouring rain, was not so dusty (forgive the bull) — was it? And the ' sporting prowess which made Duff's athletic duff rise to more or less fame has not lost all its vim. Not long ago he beat one of his | progeny — two sons are real plums of the old Duff — m a 220 yds challenge; and he is still, at the. age*. of fortyeight, a bit of a snag m B grade events m southern parts. As coach and one of the selectors for the Otago body, W.D. does yeoman service, to say nothing of his fatherlj r Interest m one and every of the young "bloods" who care to solicit his sterling advice.
