YEAR'S FIRST CLASSICS

Avondak Stafeei sm3^^ (^ Run Next Week

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Anckland Representative.) Keen interest always centres m the Avondale spring meeting because of the fact that the first really rich two and three-year-old classics of the season eventuate there.

FORM m those events duite often gives some line for the greater classics of the future. So far as two -yea I*- olds are concerned, Avondale stages the first classic Wanganui has previously observed some of both ages m action, per medium of the Debutante Stakes and the Wanganui Guineas. . However, records do not show that the Wanganui "victors have, gone on too often to victory at Avondale, but, /nevertheless, form at this week's gathering has to be considered. Of late years, northern- trained two-year-olds have had a full-dress parade for educational purposes before Avondale Stakes day, but Pakuranga coming late this year has left Bllerslletrained youngsters without a real, opportunity this term. ; ,' In truth, it is a lean season for juveniles, and Ellerslie's hopes of taking the Stakes are not "particularly bright.

It is -doubtful if there is anything really outstanding among all the juveniles owned throughout the Aucki land province at the present time. This being so, it is only reasonable to "expect, the Wanganui Debutante Stakes running to throw some light on the two-year-old classic of the following week. • ;• ''. ■ Regarding the Avondale .Guineas, matters are entirely different, for" there is tworyear-old form of last season to yirork on. "' That. undoubtedly points to Episode as the most likely winner of the mile classic up north, for there is every reason to expect the chestnut to go a mile safely. Wanganui Guineas form will tell the, tale. more correctly. .-. .There, are northern hopes which will riot be stepped but at Wanganui, but it/ really seems they will be up against it to stall off the best of the visiting brigade. .
