Aussie May Be Found Racing Ovef A journey

It is not often that a real crack sprinter turns out a good stayer, though there have been exceptions.

ONE that, will be. rushed by punters when his turn comes will be Aussie. • So far he has proved, a great - bargain to the . Te Awamutu trainer-owner, George Paul.' Paul has not been too hard on the gelding-, which has won fame mostly as a sprinter, though it is on record that Aussie won the pile King's Plate at EHersHe last season. He, carried 9st,and carved out the distance In the good time of 1.38. He did the job rather attractively that day and certainly left the' impression that he had to "be reckoned with over a longer journey. There seems no reason' why he should not go a middle distance safely. Because of the poundage likely to be allotted him iri six furlong events, it would seem that George Paul will

eventually be forced to take on the open handicaps. Towards the end of his four-year-old qareer, Aussie was certainly racing generously,- and it .did not seem , a hard matter for his rider, to keep some of the geldings' reserve- power' ln check until it ;was most needed. That indicated that Aussie should turn out a reasonable proposition over a mile and a-quarter. As a matter of fact, there are punters up north so. loyal to the ;Te,Awamutu freak that they would be found taking early- risk's about him In an Auckland Cup. , .'>,■'"' -■".-'■■ It is satisfactory to learn that Aussie has wintered safely, and he Is expected to play his part. well when produced.
