Evans' Experience
WHEN Hokitika was at the height of the gold rush m 1866, a baby
boy was born to swell the large population of the then stirring district. The baby's name was David John Evans, whose parents had come up the Coast from the far south. To-day the baby of 1866 is a courteous; medium-built, pleasantfaced man — none other than. D, J. Evans, clerk to the Westland County Council. , ' A real West Coaster, to whom nothing is a trouble when it comes to doing a kindness' or giving helpful information to an inquiring stranger, David has been associated with the council as clerk since as far back as 1891. He is always proud and pleased to show you the picture, gallery of past chairmen and members of the body he has served for so many years, while' a wealth of experience lends to his "potted^histories" an interest m the photographic records of men who have passed on, that cannot be denied. There is a story! as David Evans tells them, m every photograph,' arid the, tale is invariably the same- — a recital of ...■'service, freely given to the. community for the, benefit of posterity. The best men of the county have served ' on the council— and David speaks with pride about them all.
