Lives On Sparks
"TJARK! 'Tis the clang of a bell!"— IT and before the echoes of the peal
have died away, Superintendent Warner and his merry men are on their way to the fire. • - .
They're not at all sporting, really;' a fire doesn't even get a run for .its money m Christchurch. ■ ,
Warner, like the Irish divine famed m song, has a way wid him. He keeps the fire brigade of the flat city right up : to concert pitch; it is a modtjl of contentment and efficiency. Perhaps Warner's earlier training for the sea has something to do with It, for it must be remembered that Superintendent Charles Warner served many years m sailing 1 ships and passed m little matters like navigation with honors. , Fire-fighting is no job for anyone who prefers the softer things of life. As a consequence, firemen are- notoriously daring and cheerful individuals. And, one may, with, all regard, to truth, say that Superintendent Warner is a typical fireman. ■ ,
