ABOUT PHAOLA
Will She See Out Distance ?
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Rep.) There is a tendency not to dismiss Phaola from those with a chance m the Auckland Cup. CHE has only 7.1 to carry and is cer- *^ tainly given a show if she can see out the distance — and no one really knows that. j She has it on her side that she is a descendant of stayers on at least the sire's side of her pedigree. However, the records show that the percentage of mares to win the big handicap at Ellerslie has not been large. Phaola's victory m the Alison Cup of eleven furlongs and 40 yards with 7.6 was certainly achieved nicely at 'the right end. It was also at the business end that she carried 8.11 to victory m a mile on the Ellerslie track when she defeated Ballymoy 11. and Co. at the end of October. But m neither of these events has Phaola met anywhere near the same Class Of horses she is sure to encounter on Boxing Day. There may be some reason for hopefulness m her case with such an easy poundage. She has had a fair amount of racing, and her blood traces back to Carbine, Musket and Co.
