Always Jolly

WHEN David jolly left his native heath at Cromwell for Dunedin, he caused .his fellow- citizens a fair amount of regret. No wonder. For David J. is one of those men who are sent into this world for the express purpose of being useful and to act first and talk afterwards. Of course, it's pleasant to be missed; but it's hard on those who are doing, the missing. The good folk of (jromwell look back on Dave Jolly's work and respect him accordingly. Jolly was mayor of Cromwe,!! for many years and— when not mayor- — he was usually found working strenuo.usly as a councillor. His star line was town improvement, and, m this direction, he put some excellent toil into the beautiful grounds surrounding the soldiers' memorial. There is one fine point about Dave. When he makes a good suggestion, he thinks enough of ■it to take oft! his coat and do the spade work. Jolly loves horses simply because they are horses * and he will spend hours admiring them. Should he see a racehorse, he stands off a few feet, and — with half- closed • eyes — gazes at it like a connoisseur examining the works of an old master. ' '
