WITH THE SPEED KINGS
Trio of Sprinters That Travel Above the Average
There is speed to burn in the Shorts Handicap the first day at Trentham, quite a representative field being engaged.
SEVENTEEN have made the payment and as only five out of that number will be carrying under eight-stone some idea can be formed of the calibre of the field. Lysander, 9.2, is top-weight, but unless something unforeseen happens he will not be favorite. He did not race at Ellerslie owing to a knock he sustained. He is still a brilliant customer and liable to do it at any time. Grand Knight has yet to show any real form to make him a winner, but Joy King went a fair race at Ellerslie. Shirley knows every inch of the course and Bay reports state that she is fairly well forward. She may not be just right yet. Benzora had two races at Avondale to bring him along and he promises to be one of the hardest to beat. At his best he is real class. Doing a come-back, Suggestion ran second to Royal Ceres at Taratahi and on that race he can be looked for in the near future. He looks sound. Two wins in ordinary company at Otaki by Crown Area may be enough to see most money go his way. This will be quite in order, for he has developed into a nice horse and he certainly looks up to the class. i
Te Monanui will be getting a race in view of Monday's Champion Plate. Riccarton's hope is Booster, which is a real class horse. Served decently with a rider, he would do things, but up to date he has been unfairly treated. Hynanna is fresh and may race accordingly, but Gasco'ny , cannot be passed by lightly. He has to have a race, but his track work has been good. Royal Ceres won nicely at Taratahi and last spring as a two-year-old he had any amount of speed. He has still got it and will show it again before long. Licinius and his capabilities are well known and he runs well down the Trentham six, though he has difficulty in filling number-one berth. Lausanne is doing his best to live up to his Sydney reputation and for that reason will be passed by. Kilbronsyth does not appeal as a kid's mount, but both Lady Ideal and Silver Coot travel for light boys. The draw will have some say in the race and if well served at the post trouble may be experienced from CROWN AREA ROYAL CERES and BENZORA.
