POPULAR RACE

Wainui Will Be Hard One

There is something about mne races at Trentham that appeals to the spectator and they are always popular. DOSSIBLY it is the fact that horses 1 start from a position that enables all to follow the race from end to end. Another factor is that there is such a good straight run down the back that all get their chance. Saturday's Wainui Handicap will be a fine betting race, but it is going to be a hard one to sort out right. Once looked upon as a trial race for the New Zealand Cup, these days find it with very few of those candidates engaged. This year they number three. Tiega is back to form, as he showed by winning at Taratahi on Saturday, and with that race into him will be the hardest to head off, notwithstanding his penalty. Royal Game should take on this event instead of the longer big handicap and if he does he will be galloping at the end. Beacon Light is there, but he has not struck form yet. Damaris and Doree are three-year-old classic winners and the latter beat Paleta at Hastings. That form may work out right, but it is not likely to. Vertigern and Cerf have recent successes to their credit while Vesperus is due any time now. Gold Mint is a Riccarton horse and Orazone and Vivo will represent Hawera. Public confidence may be entrusted to TIEGA, ROYAL GAME and VERTIGERN.

TWO trainers who have made north *■ of late are Albert Jackson and Jim Jones. The last-named is locating himself at Takanini, where he will soon have a respectable team together.
