HE MISSES
But Should Be Paid Just The Same At the Wellington meeting last July, Pakeha Rangi Thomson reckoned he had been given the go-by. JTNGAGED to ride Tuki, he had tha *-* mount on the gelding m the Wellington Steeplechase and after being a long way back, finished fast over the last half-mile. - Thomson naturally concluded that he would be on the horse the last day, but he was wrong. In his place was substituted Bert Ellis and Tuki won. Then Thomson went for evens by claiming a winning mount. An inquiry was held and postponed till Thomson produced a wire ha alleged had been sent to him. Thomson got the wire all right and it read: "Expect you ride Tuki Wellington; Ware." . The wire constitutes a definite enough contract, but somehow or other it is not thought to be of that, nature by the Wellington stewards. On the production of the message, Thomson expected his money, tout like his expectations about riding Tuki, he was sadly astray. All the same, he has a justifiable grievance and he should be paid.
