FORM FROLICS

Mitchelson Upsets Avondatef (Prom "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Rep.) As previously indicated m "N.Z. Truth," it proved somewhat costly to judge the Mitchelson Cup prospects on form displayed over the same track and distance m the Avondale Cup. TO point this out more clearly, the first four to finish m the Avondale Cup were among the "also started" m the Mitchelson, while the leading pair last Saturday (Te Monanui and Mask) both gave indifferent exhibitions a fortnight before. There is, of course, no suggestion of hanky-panky on the part of any of the owners and so far as the leading pair m last Saturday's event are concerned their moderate performances m the big money at Avondale may be put down partly to the state of the going that day. This all goes to show that pun* ters were truly up against it. Te Kara, Cohesion and Eden Hall (first second and third at the Avondale fixture) were- seventh, eighth and tenth respectively m the Mitchelson, while m the Avondale Cup, Te Monanui was eighth and Mask sixth. That punters were led astray was evident from" the fact that Te Monanui drifted from second to fifth favorite from Avondale to Ellerslie and Mask from fourth to tenth favorite. The punters' lot is certainly hard! But what of the handicapper? His task is even worse m attempting to assess form at times m indifferent going.
