AT OTAKI.
The attendance at Otaki on Labor Day. was quite up to the holiday average, but about 2 p.m. heavy rain fell and continued during, the whole afternoon. This made the enclosures and tracks very sloppy, and hundreds of people left the course before the conclusion of the 'day's sport. On the second day the weather was again showery and the attendance showed a considerable falling off, The writer does not remember a whole fine day at Otaki, and it is to be hoped that when the club shifts to their new course that they will enjoy better weather. The Maoris are improving every year m the conduct of their meetings, and the most fastidious could find no cause for complaint last week. On paper the running of Waitapu looked as if an. explanation should, -have been asked for, but I do not think there was anything wrong at the bottom o£ it, but it will serve to show how inconsistent is the runnine: of horses at times. I can quite understand the howl that would have gone up had, say, The Stake run last the first day and won the second day^ but this is digressing. In point of fact, Coyle's horse was genuinely supported on both days. The officials all worked very hard to ensure the success of the meeting and a special word of praise is due to the totalisator staff under Mr Joseph Ames, for the prompt manner m which' the figures were posted. The racing is referred to m our News and Notes column.
