FISH AND FLIES
SHOPS NOT TO BE CLOSED IN “WOULD NEVER DO!” After a year’s campaign, the Health Department of the Wellington Cit.i Corporation has succeeded in inducing; all butchers to fit their shops with flyproof guards as laid down in regulations issued under the Public Health Act of 192-1. Fish shops, however, are exempted from the regulations, and numerous complaints have readied the civic authorities at this state of affairs. Approached on tho matter on Saturday, tho Hon. J. A. Young, Minister for Public Health, said: ‘‘lt would never do, I am assured by authorities in whom I have the utmost confidence, to close in fish shops as butchers’ shops have been closed in. Fish is an nntirely different food from meat. Fish, it is intended, should he kept moist and flies will not assail a wet surface. To keep meat wet, on the other hand, would injure it as a food substance. Also if fish were enclosed it might soon reach a state where the odour would he intolerable. “If proper care is exercised by the shopkeeper there should be no complaints, for the fish should he watered frequently.”
