THE NGAIO CLUB Mr W. J. Hicks is leading in the curtourney for the championship of the Ngaio Chess Club, his tally being 3 wins, 1 draw’, and 3 more games to piny. Others well to the fore are:—F. J. Brooker, 2£ ~I; E. E. Hicks, 2—l; and A. B. Topp —li- Mr Horeward Topp lias-a good lead for tho club’s junior championship with 5 wins, 1 draw, and 4 to play. The next best scores arc:—E. W.- Ford, 4s J. A. Glasgow, 31—2 J; H. Prince, 5 3; A. T. Hades. 4—3; W. Fink, 3J; C 3—3; and H, Stringer 3—3. There are l 4 competitors in the club’s annual handicap tourney, tho best performances to date being as follow :—C. Glenday, B—2; J. A. Glasgow, 5—2; W. J. Hicks, 4}—34; H. Topp, 6—4; R E. Hicks, 5—4; F. J. Brooker, 5—4; A. H. Gibson, 5—5; W. Fink 44—41, and A. T. Fades 4—4. Each competitor has to account for 13 games. CHAMPIONSHIP OF NEW ZEALAND Mr S. Crnkanthorp, of Sydney, New’ South Wales, who is champion of Australia, and also of New Zealand. will not, unfortunately, be able to defend the latter title at the Auckland Congress next month. Thus information was contained in a letter received by a local enthusiast from the champion n few days ago. Messrs A. W. Gyles (Wellington South), Ernest E. Hicks (Ngaio), and Dirk Pihi (Canterbury 0.C.), will also be notable absentees. On the other hand Mr L. Pleasants, the WRng&nui champion, intends to bo a competitor on this occasion, and the entry li»st will probably include some of New Zealand’s enthusiasts who are at the moment labelled “doubtful.”
