ABSENCE OF SERIOUS CRIME WAIKATO CONGRATULATED SENTENCES AT HAMILTON. Per Press Association. HAMILTON. November 23. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court opened to-day, Mr Justice Herdman presiding. In his charge, his Honour said that generally speaking it was a compliment to the district the absence of serious crime. Five of the eight prisoners for trial were either half-castes or Maoris. True bills were returned, in all cases. Arthur Jeffry Durant was sentenced to twelve months’ hard labour on seven counts of issuing valueless cheques at Taumorunui. Leonard Edward Smith, formerly of New Plymouth, who escaped from custody at Waikeria, where he was serving two years’ reformative treatment, had a Borstal sentence converted to twelve months’ hard labour.
