AMATEUR RADIO SOCIETY

GENERAL MEETING IMPORTANT MATTERS DISCUSSED. A general meeting of members of the Amateur Radio Society, ‘Wellington, was held in the Dominion Farmers’ Institute, on Thursday, the 18th instant. There was a good attendance of members. Mr J. H. Owen (president) occuxned the chair. The following new members were enrolled: —Messrs Liddell, Harrow, Rose, Smyth, Hogan and Leslie Jones. Attention was drawn to the fact that the Radio Broadcasting Company of New Zealand, Ltd., had only allotted about £4OOO worth of fully paid up shares so far, ou£ pf an authorised capital of £20,000. It was decided to writo the Postmaster-General, drawing attention to this fact. The following resolution was carried unanimously: “That it is the urgent wish of this Amateur Radio Society that a high powered broadcasting station be installed in Wellington, similar to that in Auckland, and that the Minister be asked to exercise his right and call upon the Broadcasting Company to install, maintain and operate an up-to-date broadcasting station in the radio district of Wellington, within six months as stipulated in the agreement between the Government and the company.

It was decided to issue an invitation to all licensed owners of receiving sets to attend the next general meeting of the society. Complaint was made by a Kelbum set owner that interference was being caused from a local electrical source, and a resolution was carried instructing the secretary to communicate with the manager of the company concerned. The Postmaster-General wrote stating that he hoped to make an announcement at an early date with regard to a new high-power broadcast station at "Wellington. The secretary was instructed to communicate with the PostmasterGeneral suggesting the desirability of shortening the wave-lengths of the New Zealand broadcast stations, so that interference from ship spark transmission will be greatly reduced, and to allow new wave lengths so that the New Zealand broadcast stations will not interfere with the Australian stations.

TRANSMISSION Attenion was drawn to the bad transmission from IYA (Auckland) and 3YA (Christchurch) and a resolution was carried unanimously “That this society protests against the inferior quality of the transmission from 3iA (Christchurch) which suffers considerably from distortion night after night and occasional serious lapses in the same direction, from IYA (Auckland), winch this society suggests is remediable, and protests against the transmission from, and impossibility of, the existing Wellington (2YK) station. A member pointed out the marked difference in reception between afternoon and night transmission from 3YA (Christchurch). All members were unanimous in their desire to bring about an immediate improvement respecting transmission from all stations in New. Zealand, and to see a new station installed in Wellington as soon as possible) the society being anxious to do its best for radio broadcasting, also encouragement of a larger number of licenses. Mr E. Todd gave a demonstration of a six-valve single-dial-control receiving set (resistance coupled) comprising three radio and detector and two stages of audio (transformer coupled). Mr R. Leslie Jones was unanimously appointed hon. secretary, and Mr W. J. Roche (treasurer) in place of Messrs Grouhand and T. Megann respectively, who tendered their resignations, owing to a change in their jpccupations, which them from continuing in office. A vote of thanks was passed to the retiring hon. secretary and treasurer.
