GRAND CARNIVAL
TUG-OF-WAR CONTEST. What promises to be one of the most successful bazaars of the year was opened at St. Francis'* Hall, Hill street, last night. It is in tho form of a carnival and tug-of-war tournament, the proceeds of which are to go to various Roman Catholic funds. The opening ceremony was'performed by His Grace Archbishop Redwood, who wished the organisers every success. Those in charge of the stalls are:—KaroriMiss Cameron, assisted by Mesdames Dunne, Nimino, and Johnsen. Thorndon: Mrs McGill, assisted by Mrs Brosnan and Misses Tiller, Maticr, Bond, and Curtis. Northland: Mrs Atkin, assisted by Mesdames McLure and Turkington, Miss Furlong, and Miss Bacon. There are various side-shows, which were -well patronised. Nightly thero will be a dancing display by Wellington teachers and a grand spectacular military manoeuvre, entitled “The Parade of the Black and White Ponies/’ designed and arranged by and danced by pupils of Mr Joe Knowsley. The star items each evening will be a monster tug-of-war contest, in which 20 teams will compete. * .Last night’s events were won by Collins’s team, which defeated O’Connell’s by 18 inches, and Quirk's team proved superior to Dear's.
