LAfE PIPER J. SIMPSON The death of the late Mr Joseph Simpson will be greatly felt by his many friends and admirers. First and foremost a true Son of Scotland, Mr Simpson was a man of many parts, being a first-class piper, drummer, dancer attd singer, and his services and. sound advice rendered to Scottish and other organisations were immeasurable. Bom in Dunfermline. Fifesliire. 45 years ago, the deceased went to the Boer War at the age of 19 years, and when peace whs declared he joined up, as a. piper in the Transvaal Scottish forces, subsequently going to T'.S.A. for a few years, and then coming to Welling! nn. He was a pipe-major of the now defunct Wellington Pipe Band, and was for some time corporal in charge of the pipe hand at Awnpuni camp during the (front War. He was of a particularly cheerful disposition. and . was second to none in liis singing of humorous Scottish songs, his musical contributions at functions of the old Scottish Society and latterly of the Scots’ Social Club, of Which be
was a committee member, being always most popular. The funeral, which was a Highland one, took place on Tuesday, when there was a largo gathering of mourners and many floral tributes. Highland honours were performed by ex-Drum-Major Colin Campbell and Pipers MacCallum, Morrison and Small, who were all in national garb, and the coffin was appropriately draped with i l ’- Scottish standard. The playing of the “Lament” by the three pipers through the cemetery at the head of the cortege was most impressive, and the final hon6ur by the pipers. “Lochaber no More,” played at the head of the grave, affected many.
