SETTLER SHOT
v IN CRITICAL CONDITION ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE INCIDENT IN BACK COUNTRY (By Telegraph:—Special to “Times.’*; STRATFORD, November 15. Particulars of the shooting affrav i* the back country yesterday, which resulted in the arrest of Stanley Emerson Carlyle Taylor on a charge of attempting to murder James Farreiiy, are stall meagre. Farreiiy is in the Stratford Hospital in a critical condition, ahd cannot make a statement, and it ’is "understood Taylor has made no statement. From the information available it appears that Farreiiy had been wandering about the district for some time and settlers in the locality, especially women, were afraid of him. It is alleged he went to Taylor’s place on Friday last, when tronble ensued, and he returned again on Sunday and threatened to tie Taylor up, and it was then the shooting occurred. When Taylor was brought before the Police Court to-day charged with attempted murder, his counsel (Mr Coleman) made a strong appeal for bail. He said that it was practically certain that the charge would be reduced. Sergeant Reid stated that the medical superintendent of the hospital informed him that the victim’s condition was critical. Nothing was known against the accused, and he suggested that a short remand be granted 30 tfiat if the victim’s condition the question of bn?l could be reopened. The magistrate withheld hail in tha meantime, and remanded Taylor till Friday. WOUNDED IN THE FACE Taylor resides in the countv ot Whangamomona. about 40 miles from Stratford. Taylor is alleged to have shot Farreiiy in the fac.. hut what led up to the incident has not vet befin ascertained.
