ENGINEER'S REPORT.
The borough engineer, Mr E. A. Gumbley, reported as follows for tho four weeks ended on June 11th:
On the nights of June Ist and 2nd there occurred an abnormal and disturbing outflow of water from the reservoir, between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. On June 3rd a' serious leak was discovered on the stop-bank between the bridge and White's line east; when this was corrected the reservoir outflow returned to normal.
For tho months of April and May nine building permits were issued. These represented the total expenditure of in buildings and additions to buildings, and returned £6 10s in fees.
Gas supply for the month of March, 2,141,000 cubic feet of gas were purchased from Petqno. Of this amount 2,237,200 cubic feet were consumed for domestic purposes, 181,100 cubic feet for power purposes, and 77,000 cubic feet for street lighting. The consumption given above considerably exceeds the amount purchased. This was explained by the fact that the March meter reading was not completed, owing to change of meter readers, until ten days later than usual; 'ho April returns should show a considerable riso in unaccounted for gas. For the month of March last year the figures were:—Purchased from Petone, 1,758,000 cubic feet; domestic purposes, 1,461,900 cubic feet; power purposes, 116,500 cubic feet; street lightinc, 72,600 cubic feet; unaccounted for, 6.08 per cent.
