UNUSUAL APPLICATION. A LAPSE AND THEN A TRANSFER. PEB PRESS ASSOCIATION. TAURANGA, June 10. At the annual meeting of the Tauranga Licensing Committee to-day an application was made, and granted, for the renewal of the accommodation license at Makctu. • Application was also made for an accommodation liccnso at Matamata, whore no license now exists. Mr H. A. Sharp, representing the applicant, A. Montgomery, applied to have tho adjourned till July Bth. The intention, ho said, was not to pay a fee for the Maketu license, thus allowing it' to lapse. ■ A liccnso then' being available, application would ho made to grant it at Matamata.
The application was opposed by the police, Mr Black (boardinghousekeeper at the Matamata Glaxo Factory), and several other petitioners. Mr Richmond, appearing for Mr Black, described the application for the adjournment as a piece of legal trickery, and strongly opposed granting it., After lengthy legal argument, tho committee decided to grant tho adjournment, in order that tho full committee should deal with tho matter, one member being absent to-day.
