THE WELLINGTON CLUB THIRTY-FOURTH ANNUAL REPORT!. The following is the thirty-fourth annual report of the Wellington Club to be presented to the annual meeting to' be held nest week;— Your directors, in presenting the thirty-fourth annual report and balancesheet, desire to congratulate shareholders upon the continued prosperity of (he club and its sound financial position. During the year ended March 31st, 1920, 30 new members were elected, and the loss by resignations and other causes "as 19, leaving a total membership (including 13 honorary members) of 208. The year commenced with a debit balance of .£338 16s 4d, and ended with a debit balance of £157 Is 9d. The- greens were opened for play by His Excellency the Governor and Latly Liverpool on October 11th, and. play’continued until April 27th, 1920. Your directors record with deep regret the death of five members, viz.:—Messrs Chas. Hill, B. Mowat, D. J. Nathan, G. Remington, and A. W. Yarrall. Mr P. W. Haybittle (a past president of the club), who has rendered valuable services in years past, has been elected an honorary member during his absence from the Dominion. The winners of the club competitions during the season were: — Champion singles, Mr A. Wylie'; champion pair’s, Messrs J. O’Sullivan and J. H. O’Donnell; nomination rinks, M.essrs A. Simpson, E. Norton, A. H. Carey, and W. Glendinning; president’s and vice-president’s trophies, Messrs R. Roberts, J. Knox. W. Glendinning, and H. Jackman: Ehster pairs, Messrs L. Ledger and S. Potter.

The club took part in the usual interclub competitions without favourable results. In the friendly matches with othe> olubs the results were generally in favour of the club. In the Dominion tournament, held at Christchurch, the club was represented by six rinks, and in the centre tournament ten rinks entered, without favourable results. In the champion of champions competitions the club was represented by Mr A. Wylie in the singles; in the pairs by Messrs J. O’Sullivan and J. H. O’Donnell ; and in the rinks by Messrs A. Simpson, JEJ. Norton, A. H. Carey, and W. Glendinning; all reaching the semi-final stage. Messrs E. Diddle, A. Duncan, W. Glendinning, and F. J, Tasker were successful in winning the Hill pins from Victoria Club, and now hold them until next season. During, the Easter holidays a pairs tournament was held, and proved one of the most enjoyable competitions held by the club. The annual match for the friendly bowl, played at Christchurch , on Wednesday, January 7th, was won by your club. The outing was much enjoyed by the players, who were treated most hospitably. The Duthie Cup competition took place on the club’s green on Wednesday, February Uth. and resulted in a win for the Hutt teams. The visitors were entertained at a smoke concert in the evening. The annual match against the combined city and suburban clubs was played on Saturday, February 14th, and. again resulted in a win for the parent club. Fourteen rinks took part, tho scores being 321 for, 284 against. The club has an unbeaten record for this event. Your directors have added another billiard table to the club-room, making three in all. They are proving a pleasure to members and. a source of revenue to the club. At the invitation of the directors, the members, their wives and lady friends spent a • very enjoyable social evening in the club’s pavilion on Friday, July 30th. For King's Birthday evening, Thursday. June 3rd, the president and vice-president issued invitations for an "at home," which was attended by a largo number of members, who, with their lady friends, spent a most enjoyable evening. During the year the ladies have again ably assisted at the various functions held at the club house, f< r which .the directors desire to express their thanks. In accordance with a resolution passed at the last annual meeting, your directors made arrangements to have suitably laid out,, as a peace memorial, the land adjoining the green, but owing to a shortage of cement the work has been delayed. Under the superintendence of Mr Glendinning it is now proceeding, and should be completed in good time Many donations have been received, and the directors respectfully invite all members to contribute, so that the whole cost may be defrayed hr tho generosity of the members.

Tho ■directors refer to the very handsome silver peace cup presented to the club bv the president, Hr T. Ballinger, as a trophy "for champion singles. The gift is a particularly generous one, end Mr Ballinger's kindlv action is fully op-, predated by all our members. Special conditions have been framed for comnetitions for this trophy, and Mr A. Following is an abstract of notices of motion: — Mr Sicvwright That, in regard to pennant matches, the match committee select the skips, who then will confer with tho committee as to selection of remainder of teams. That a paid secretary and treasurer be appointed. That \te secede from the centre. Mr Hill—Preparation of ground for pennant matches. , That 40 members (selected by members at annual meeting) be pennant match players; the 40 selected to elect the skips, and the skips select the teams for approval of the match committee. Sir Innes—That for pennant matches a sole selector be appointed. , Mr Tasker —That candidates for admission as shareholders bo elected by ihe directors, subject to the right of any sis members to demand a ballot.
