MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr F. V. Frazer, S.M., presided over Saturday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. Charles Arthur Glazebrook, who was before the court for drunkenness, explained that he had an attack of fever and ague, and had taken whisky as a cure. The sum of 17s 6d had been incurred on the accused's behalf for medical treatment, and he was ordered to pay the amount, in default to go to jail for 72 hours. Paku Smith, a Maori,' who" appeared in the dook in uniform, pleaded guilty to a charge of threatening behaviour,'whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned on Ijambtbn; quay. Evidence was given that Smith was hit over the head by a man in the street, and he wanted to retaliate;' Under the circumstances, the magistrate said he would convict the accused and discharge him. It was no use explaining the intricacies law to a native when his blood was up, added Mr Frazer, but a person when struck was supposed in law to get away; if he could not get away he was allowed to defend himself. Charles Heke, a native, pleaded guilty to insobriety and to using obscene language in Taranaki street. He was; convicted and discharged for drunkenness, and fined £l, in default 72 hours, for using the obscene language. "* William Aubrey did not admit a charge of obstructing Constable Joseph Quinn. whilst in the execution of his duty. The police were arresting Charles Heke, a Maori soldier,, when the aoemped interfered and wanted Constable Quinn to let his prisoner go. A gathered, and there was an indication that a riot might take place. A civilian came to the j assistance of the constable. Aubrey i caught hold of the oivilian, tried to pull him away, and got a good hiding for his trouble. The defendant was * convicted and fined £5 with costs. - *
