» EVIDENCE AT CARTERTON. Press Association. CARTERTON, May 24. - The Industries Gommittee sat at Carterton' this morning, and was welcomed by the Mayor. Evidence was given urging the importance of the Rimutaka deviation j the necessity for overcoming the prejudice against. New Zealand-manufac-tured boots and shoes, knitted yarns, and clothing; and Government upkeep of main and arterial roads. ' Other witnesses urged the -inspection of Australian and imported wheat iwith regard to the weevil, both in Australia and on arrival in New Zealand; the inspection of chaff and oats from the South Island to prevent the spread of Calif ornian thistle; the importance of appointing inspectors and instructors to visit cheese and butter factories; a proper system of testing herds; the reservation of white pine for cheese cases; better facilities for the transport of live stock and perishable goods; the abolition of extra freight on imported coal; and to enable local bodies to under- i take the ereotion of workers' dwellings. Mr Booth also urged a reversion to the pre-war railway time-table for the Wairarapa, and a non-stop run between Upper Hutt and Wellington, the wants of that district being supplied by a. suburban service. The committee left by motor-cars for Greytown, and will sit in Masterton on Monday.
