CHEISTCHUROH, May 19. A proposal that the Ohristchurch City Council should go into the coalmining business by running its own mine on the West Coast and buying steamships to transport the coal, was made to-day to tho Mayor (Dr. Thacker) by Messrs W. J. Courtier and Wheeler, who are interested in a coal project at Fore's Creek, halfway between Greymouth and Westport. Dr. Thackor stated that tho deputation informed him that there was a harbour available oapable of accommodating ships drawing up to 20ft of water, and tho coal Bamples displayed by members of the deputation were from an area sifuated half a mile aw.ay at low elevation. Dr. Thaoker will submit a proposition to the' City Council at Monday's meeting.
