COST OF THE WAR
NEW (ZEALAND'S SHARE,
A cable published on the 15th_ inst. gave the total cost of the war in respect of various countries, and stated that at that time New Zealand's outlay was some 75J million pounds. A "Times" representative approached the Hon. Arthur M*'ers, Acting Minister for Finance, yesterday, as to the authenticity of the statement in question.
"The total of £75,750,000 is given as the figure to which our war expenses account will eventually attain," remarked Mr Myers, "and in this sense, the estimate by the Australian Statistician is on the moderate side. The actuarco&t of the war to New Zealand on March 31st last was' 62£ millions. When to this is added our expenditure on pensions, repatriation, discharged soldiers' settlement, interest, etc., the full cost of the part we took in tho struggle will ultimately surpass the figure of 75| millions referred to. Until, however, one has the complete figures on which to base estimntes, it is impossible to state accurately the amount of the, Dominion's total expenditure on the 'vrar."
