HOCKEY
SEASON OPENS SATURDAY’S MATCHES AT KARORI. Favoured with perfect weather and a largo attendance, the 1919 hockey serf son opened at Karori Park on Saturday. The grounds were an excellent order, consequently some very fast play was witnessed in both the ladies and men's sections. The following were the games played during the. afternoon:— MEN’S SECTION KARORI v. CENTRAL. These teams met on No. 1 ground and provided an excellent . game, play being even all tUrougii. Shortly after the bully off’the Central forwards instituted a passing rush, resulting in F. Muir scoring—Central •1. - Karori 0. .- On play. Reing resumed Karori attacked strongly, and after some V scrappy” play in Central’s half White tor Karori evened up matters with a strong shot. Karori kept up the attack and ' several times came near : to scoring. Smith, 'on the left wing, distinguished himself. _ .. Central retaliated, but Harris (Earori’s right back) saved well, and sent the ball up to the forwards. Davis (right wing) then obtained' the white and centred nicely to Purois (bully) who sent in: a shot which beat the .custodian.—Karori 21 Central 1. After this reverse. Central attacked., but Trilford .'(Karori’s right helf) relieved, the situation temporarily. Central continued to '.attack, but again the Karori backs were equal-to-the occasion. When half-time sounded Karori were attacking strongly, the first spell ending—Karori 2. Central 1. From the commencement of the second spell Central broke away, .but shortly afterwards Karori turned the . tables. Smith, -who was playing a fine gaine,.carried the ball down the left wing, bu* insufficient support prevented nun from adding to the score.' Hitting off from the twenty-five line. Central were able to relieve the position,, bulb their forwards were unable to pass Harris,- the Karori back. ' Central persisted, however. arid from a piece of mixed play in front of Kiarori’s goal F. Muir found the net. Central 2. Karori 2. Play now livened up considerably, both sides,taking turns at attacking. S. Davis (Karori) got the ball down the right wing, and sent in a stinging shot, which omnpletelv baffled the. Central "goalie.’ With -about ten minutes to go. Central, determined not to suffer defeat, made the pace very twilling and ultimately succeeded in evening up. H. Devonport secured the goal. The game tnen ended in a draw, with three goals each. The referee was Mr K. Lloyd. WELLINGTON v. RAMBLERS.
This was a good game,’ and play was very fast, throughout, Wellington distinguishing themselves in this direction. Ramblers played only three backs, and Poynton played in goal, in place of their usual custodian. I*rom the, bully eff, Mushett (on the right wing) moved play down towards tßam biers’ circle with a long drive, and Champness rushed up and made a good attempt at goal,, but the ball hit the top bar. From a comer hit Ashwin secured the ball and found the net with a hefty shot. Wellington ft ‘liamlbhirs 0. Wellington then had to concede a free hit to Ramblers, who, after good play, carried the white up to Wellington's circle, where Ramblers made repeated attempts to even up tha score, but their opponents’ custodian saved in good stylo. Johns managed to get the ball from a free hit. and dribbling nicely took it into the circle, where he scored an easy goal. Wellington 2. Ramblers 0. For a spell play, was confined to midfield. until Chapman, for Wellington, relieved the presure with a long hit down the line, Ramblers then livened things up and commenced a senes ol passes. Soon afterwards they were rewarded, tor Wheatley opened Ramblers’ score with a nice shot. Flay was then very fast, both sides giving a good exhibition of clean hockey. Half-time sounded shortly after, the scores reading Wellington 2. Ramblers I. ...
Un resuming Ramblers forced the , play somewhat, Daines taking the hall into Wellington’s territory. Blaokie had a shot which proved unsuccessful. A passing rush by Wellington brought play right up to their opponents’ goal, a melee resulting. Wellington were then conceded a corner hit, and as a result things looked dangerous for Ramblers, but Poynton was safe in goal. Immediately afterwards, however. Chapman, after a r«ce for the ball, passed to Ashwin, who dribbling nicely, carried the ball to the cir. ole, eventually scoring- Wellington 3, Ramblers 1. From the half-way bully, Champness had the ball delivered to him, and taking it up shot an easy goal. Weilington 4, Ramblers 1. Up and down play ensued until the call of time, the finAl scores reading Wellington 4, Ramblers 1. . The game was controlled by S, Empsbn. JUNIOR GRADE. Huia (4 goals) defeated Wesley B (0). Keyes (2), Hailwood (1), and. Littlejohn (1) scoring. Kefree, Mr B. Wallace. Wellington (8) v. Victoria College (2), The scorers for the winners were O’Brien i 3), Bateman (3), and Hurray (2), while Mcßldowney (1) and Devonport (1) scored for the losers. Mr A. Edwards was the. referee. LApiES’ HOCKEY. Ramblers A (11) beat Audit (0). The Misses. Williams (5), a, Sisson, Pickering, and Lang (two-bach) scored .for the winners. Mr R. J. Lloyd was the referee.' Victoria College (12) defeated Y.W.C.A. B (0). The scorers were the Misses Mills (5), Bead (3), Richards (3), and Me. Murray (1). Mr W. Lowry was the referee. Wellington-College A (9) beat Welling, ton College B (0). The following scored for the A team: The Misses Martin (3) Dewhurst (3(, . Beddell (2), and Lucena (1). Mr B. Edwards controlled the game. Baso Records (1) drew with Ramblers B (1). Miss Longliurst for Base Records and Miss Cooper for Ramblers were the scorers.
