RACING NEWS

FIXTURES. May 22 and 23—North Otago J.C. ilav 22 and 21—Wanganui J.C. May 29 —Targtahi-Carterton E.C. May 31. June 3 and s—Auckland5 —Auckland E.C. June 3 and 4—Otaki E.C. NOTES AND COMMENTS IBy "Tohnnga.") Eillowen, who has been racing in the Lowry colours, has gone back to the stable of Mr J. B. Reid. Waipunoa broke a fetlock recently and has been destroyed. Royal Park has been sought by a »yndicate, but his owner could not hear what was being said. J. Scobie has the yearling sister to Gloaming (The Welkin—light) in his stable. She will probably race in the name of -.Refraction.

Arai-te-TJru, who waa breli By Mr Spencer Gbllan, has produced two good ones in Kilbrogan (who holds the Australasian , record for six furlongs) and Mnrihiku. both of whom should be heard of next season. Kilbrogan is by Kilbroney, and Mnrihiku by Sunny Late. Arai-te-Uru threw a good Tarlngatnutu, who was in foal to Kiibroney.

Warstep's first filly, by Solferino, is now being put through her facings by Murray ttobbs, at Eiccarton. "Sentinel." in the "Otago Daily Times.” says that there was a rumour abroad that one of the winners at Forauiy Park ran..incognito, but it a inasonerader can win in ; # i>ns liorso tini©' it does mot say much' for those against him.

All Bed was the most successful sire at, the South Canterbury meeting, his representatives being Cattach, Radial, The Boss, and All .Serene, The . sires of . i he-rest of the winners were well distributed. ■

P.'.E. Jones had a good innings at the Timaru meeting. He trained John Barleycorn' and Rapid Eiver (riding the latter .in the May Stakes), and rode Mortham and Indus into first place.

Alpionar has changed hands and will in nuure be. trained by P. Hogan at Invercargill. The price realised, is said to bo -£SOO, which is a good’ amount for such an unsatisfactory animal. The eon of Boniform and Cassock has always displayed great galloping powers and inclinations on the track, but when asked to reproduce that form with, the satin up has invariably failed to do so. The inclinations of the public regarding sport can always be ascertained through their pockets. If a man desires a thing he is prepared to pay tor it. and' if :he is prepared to pay for a thing it is obvious that he either desires or requires it. Uf course there are some queer people who will always butt in and endeavour to guide or counsel the other fellow,- but the adviser would be very annoyed if he were proffered advice. At the recent Timara meeting the sporting public of South Canterbury showed their appreciation of , racing by creating new records on the machine (which, in some circles, is called a curse). On the first day of the. meeting a record was put np. bnt it was eclipsed on the second day, md oh the latter occasion, not one first favourite won. The significance of that remark lies in the fact that when the favourites could not get home the money of the public (those who create favourites) is locked up in the pockets of a ow. So that taking the fact into consideration tha tnumbers 5,2, 6,2, 3,3, 2 and i won on the second day, the public obviously enjoys its sport, and is prepared to . pay for it, despite the efforts of the killjoy element to send them all to school again. • The three-year-old gelding Caveroct. when ran second to John Barleycorn in the Autumn Handicap at Timaru, threatened to do great things as a two-year-old, but he won but one race, the Dominion Handicap at Dunedin, in the spring of 1917. - He is out of that remarkably successful mare Madder, who produced the dam of Sasanof, Ukraine. \ladder (who is by Gossoon from Madrass by ; Chester—Gymkhana by Emulation — Gaiety) has given some very good stock to the racing world of these parts, amongst them being Madrigal, who produced Tarantelle, Swanson, Munjeet, Mungirta, All Bed, Cronstadt, and Bose Pink. It is a fairly close thing between Cetigne and Desert Gold for second place to Carbine in the list of great winner® of the Australian and New Zealand turf. Cetigne Is credited with winning .£22,700, while Desert Gold has captured .£22,571.' Cetigne, who is engaged in valuable races set down for decision at . Bandwick shortly, is advantageously placed to ■nden the gap separating his winnings from .those of the New Zealand mare. A.J.C. MEETING POXTKEL WINS THE) AUTUMN STAKES.
