During the war period League football iis far ns Wellington was concerned practically died out. It has now awakened from its long sleep, and has emerged stronger numerically than live years ago by the addition ’to its ranks of a number of young -players.

PETONE B v. ATHLETIC. The Petone B-Athletio game on Saturday was in the nature of a, try-out for young players who had joined the ranks or vuo League this season. Considering that the majority of the players were new to the game they acquitted themselves well. Athletic had the: advantage of having Wilson and Bradley an the team, .These two p,ayei> cud most of the star "stunts,” and it was mainly through their knowledge and instrumentnlity that-Athletic won by 23 homes to 3. Wilson. Bradley (£i. and Mears scored tries for the winners, two of which nere converted bv Bradley and one by Weaver. Bradley also potted* a goal

from the field. Petone's only try was obtained by Henderson. Mr A, White was the referee. . PIiTONE T .SUBURBS.

This was an open, fast game of two spells of thirty minutes each. There were several Rugby old-timers playing, including J. Spencer and L. Campbell, wliilo il. Tailored was among the forwards on the I’ctone side. i'etone had the best of the argument and tries were obtained by Whitley (2), Porter and Ashton, one of which was converted by Chiide, and Whitley kicked-a' goal from a penalty. Warren scored a try for Suburbs, which Manning converted, and the game ended. Pctono 16, Suburbs 5. Vt if understood the selectors of the tchra for Australia were present, and amongst those chosen were Tailored, Whitley. Bradley and Ashton. Tancred appeared to bo right out of his. element, ■ ■ t did not apprreiato his sudden conversion from a Rugby forward into a League back. The game is purely a back one, as all the forward play—or oraetieally all of it—so dear to Rugby, and which makes the game worth while, has been eliminated. ■
