IMPURE DRUGS

-CHEMISTS DEMAND A "WAB RANTY. Regret Was 'expressed at the annual conference of the Pharmaceutical Society last evening that there had recently, been two prosecutions of chemists unden the Sale of Food and Drugs Act. The president (Mr F. Castle) remarked that tho fact that prosecutions ,Tia.d, v Aftken place cast a reflection on the profession, but they had io remember that in spite of the large number of samples taken there had been very few prosecutions. This indicated that the chemists of New Zealand maintained a very higb. standard indeed. Subsequently Mr .A. Hobson Hawko's Bay), moved the following re mit dealing with the matter: —"That a'warranty be given by all wholesale druggists as to the conformity ,of their supplies and preparations to "the New Zealand Food and Drugs Act." • Members' were unanimously of the opinion that now that the war was over the Health Department inspectors would be particularly active. At the present time chemists were under a great disability for in the absence of a !warranty they were liable to bo prose,c'ut<yj .when the fault was not theirs. ~T,frey were all desirous of maintaining a good reputation with the public and it. was very' unfair that thoy s.houid hoar the brunt of another party's shortcomings. ... * A member "remarked .that the wholesale- druggists raised no objection to giving a warranty with goods of their own manuiacture, but they declined to accept responsibility for made-up goods.

Another member snid in fairness to tho wholesale druggists that the samples which brought irbout the prosecutions it ere made up by the ciicm"ists concerned. After further discussion the remit was carried without dissent, and it was decided to interview tho "Wholesale Druggists' Association on the matter
