EASING THE PRESSURE
TELEGRAPH OPERATORS. Prompt measures have been taken by the authorities to ease the pressure recently felt in the telegraph operating rooms of the principal centres of the Dominion, and yesterday fifteen telegraph cadets were drafted from tho learners’ school at Oannum ■to meet the requirements at the various telegraph offices throughout New Zealand, On Tuesday last a second learners’ school was opened at Wellington, in the old Drill Shed, where twenty youths, drawn principally from country stations, are accommodated in a comfortably fitted-up room, about 3Sft square. Provision has been made to accommodate a class consisting of twenty-five boys, and the additional number will reach Wellington in the course of a few days. The instructor. Air Quinlan, of the Telegraph Office, has taken the boys in hand, and has arranged comfortable lodgings to the satisfaction of the parents. Several of tho lads are already good operators, and in tho course of a few weeks they should be thoroughly qualified for practical work in some of the first-grade post offices. The others will require tuition for about three months. It is the intention to re-open the Oamaru school in the course of two or three weeks, when a further batch of twenty uoys will he sent there.
