CIVIC AFFAIRS
MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The City Council met last night Present; The Mayor (Mr D. McLaren), and Councillors J. Smith, F. Cohen, G. Frost, J. Trevor, J. Godber, R. Fletcher, A. H. Hindmarsh, A. R. Atkinson, L. McKenzie, W. H. P. Barber, G. Shirtcliffe, J. Fuller, J. E. Fitzgerald. USB OF THE TOWN HALL. In the report of the finance committee it was stated that the following concessions in the tariff for the Town Hall were made: The Citizens’ Carnival committee has been granted the use of the Town Hall for Saturday, March 29th, for its final concert. The Anglican Mission authorities have been granted the use of tbe concert chamber from 1.30 p.m. to 1.50 p.m. during the currency of the mission at a special charge of 10s per use. The Methodist Church was granted the use of the Town Hall and organ on Sunday, the 16th inst., for the Scott memorial service. TRAMWAYS AND POWER STA ITONS. It was recommended by the tramways and ' power stations committee and agreed: That conveniences be erected at the Newtown carshed depot, at an estimated cost of £165, as recommended by; the ' tramways board. , - ■ That the lighting at the. .tramway terminus, Wades town, be improved, as recommended by the tramways board. That the tender of Messrs P. R. Baillie and Co. for transformers be accepted, as recommended by the electrical engineer. , That the tender of Mr J. McLellan for weir pump, piping, etc., be accepted, as recommended by the electrical engineer. That a duplicate turbine set and boiler be purchased for the electric lighting department, as recommended by the electrical engineer. THE PUBLIC HEALTH. On the recommendation of the abattoirs and pnblic health committee ,it was decided to authorise condemnation notices being served upon _ the owners and occupiers of four buildings. BATHS AND CITY RESERVES. The recommendations of the bath* and city reserves committee included the following; That the request of the Wellington Grocers’ Union for permission to usa Newtown Park on Wednesday afternoon, April 9th, for a sports meeting be granted. That authority be granted to the town bolt forester to order the necessary tree seeds required by him. That provision be made_ in next year’s estimates for an additional convenience at To Axo moo’s baths. That a person reported for misbehaviour be excluded from the public baths for the remainder of the season. The committee reported: That they have granted pel mission to the Newtown district high school and the Roseneath State school to hold their annual picnics at Newtown Park on the 26 th inst. and March Ist respectively, sdbject to the cricket matches'not being interfered with; That they have received an offer of £2O per annum’for the lease of'section of town belt. Grant road, containing ■about sixty ’ acres. The city valuer fixed, the iipset rental at £6Ol The committee recommended that the offer be declined, and that the city engineer bo instructed to bring down, a scheme for the ‘sub-division of the block into smaller sections, and also to .submit an estimate of the cost of fencing. .
