GARDEN FETE
Yesterday afternoon a garden fete -was held in the grounds of Mr and Mrs J. P. Luke’s residence, in Hiropi street. The day was hot and fine, just the weather to tempt people to snch a inaction. and they came accordingly, and the T.W.C.A. —in whose interest the fete was held—should make quite a nice little sum thereby. Stalls were set about the lawn, prettily arranged, lovely flowers were on the flower stall, under the charge of Misses McLean and Dunlop, as well as the more useful domestic commodities of mint, sage, etc. Mrs Posette, with a bevy of helpers, sold all kinds of attractive fancy goods, and sweets were also on sale under the charge of Miss Olive Hart. A hand played in the garden, and Miss Luke, assisted by a number of friends, served tea to the guests outside. Inside. during the afternoon, a series of concerts were held, and among those contributing thereto were Miss Ward, Mrs Kennedy, and Miss Evans, who gave songs; Miss Cecil Haines gave recitations, and Misses Hazel Jeffries, Bello Luke, and Erica Hoby gave violin solos. Mrs Massey came to open the fete at 3 o’clock, and was welcomed and thanked by Mr Luke in a short speech. She wore a long black satin coat and grey and pink toque. Mies Massey, Miss Hammond, and Miss Harding accompanied her, and all made purchases at the various stalls. There were also present during the afternoon. Miss Coates, Mrs Webster. Miss McLean. Miss Birch, and many others. Mrs Luke wore a dress of black silk with embroidery and a plumed hat.
