SHORT-LIVED JOY RIDE
IN A COMMANDEERED MOTOR-
CAR. About 7 o’clock last evening a Ford motor-car was standing in Hopper street, the driver having left it for a few minutes. On returning, ho was astonished to find that the car had disappeared. Someone had in the meantime assumed charge, and together with three companions he drove the car through town towards the Hutt road. Everything went well until the. usurpers were near Ngahauranga, when a tyre burst, punctured, or came off. This necessitated repairs; jacks were requisitioned, and the car was backed towards the hill for the operation. While restoration was proceeding, however, a telltale car came spinning inwards from the Hutt, observed the work, and reported the incident on arrival in town. The driver of the Ford had meanwhile proclaimed his loss far and wide. A punitive expedition of chauffeurs was hastily organised, and very soon was hastening outwards to recover the Ford. Some distance beyond Kaiwarra the four punitive chauffeurs encountered the Ford coming slowly towards town. The usurpers had decided to turn back from Ngahauranga. Possession was claimed, and one of the occupants of the Ford was so startled that he jumped out and ran for his life in the opposite direction.
