“IN A CIRCLE OF FIRE.”
TRIALS OF IHE BUSH SETTLER. A correspondent writes: “We all had a very anxious time with the bush fires at Rua Ron (seven miles from Dannevirke) on Thursday night. Talk about Dante’s Inferno 1 We were in the midst of a circle of .fire. Some of the settlers just got out of their houses in time, before the fire swept everything aivay. The_ settlers are heavy losers. One family with four little children escaped in what they stood in. It was a sad spectacle. Mostly everyone has lost hie feed for the stock, so what the cattle will do is a bit of a problem just now. What made the fire travel so fast through the bush was the terrific gale which blew miles an hour. The fire will cripple some of the settlers for the winter.”
